What Do Astronomers Do?

We all love sky and the beautiful stars, moon that adorns it. We all get excited when there is solar eclipse or lunar eclipse. We all wish when we see a shooting star. The study about all the things related to sky is called Astronomy. Astronomy is the science of celestial bodies and their origin, composition, movement, distribution and evolution. And those who study astronomy are called astronomers.

What do Astronomers do?

Astronomers are the person skilled in astronomy or who observe or study about the universe. Most astronomers concentrate on a particular question or area of astronomy, for example, planetary science, solar astronomy, the origin and evolution of stars or the formation of galaxies as universe is vast and can be studied in parts only. In general, astronomers unfold how the universe came into being, about solar systems and its planet, about different features of planets, about the galaxies, and about the past and future of our universe as a whole. Depending on their areas of specialization, astronomers are classified into various groups like observational astronomers, stellar astronomers, solar astronomers, optical astronomy, theoretical astronomy, infrared astronomy, radio astronomy, ultra violet astronomy, etc.

Astronomy is a science that depends upon the fields such as physics, chemistry, mechanics, meteorology, computer science, and mathematics. All the astronomical objects are quiet far from the earth so they are reached by special type of telescopes. Information about all the objects comes indirectly from earth bound telescopes or earth-orbiting satellites, which observe the movement or light reflected from such objects. The information which we then get unfolds the enigma related to the cosmos. The telescope shows the picture and light from the objects, it is the job of the astronomer to read, analyze and interpret the data. The astronomical knowledge is made rich by research, a systematic inquiry in which the scientists gather the information and prepare a hypothesis.

Astronomers use ground based telescopes, equipped with latest light gathering instruments, to measure the chemical composition of starts, the mass of the clusters, and to study about the compositions of the planets or stars.  Key queries about the big bang and the nature of the materials in universe can only be studied by the behavior of the particles. Thus, in order to understand the large universe, astronomers will have to study about the small particles form which they are made. Astronomers are involved in taking astronomical observations, using different kinds of telescope, or a range of satellites and detectors, work on developing theories, sometimes make predictions which are then tested by computational analysis, understand data and verify it mathematically.

What do astronomers do depends on what skills do they use as an astronomer. Astronomers need a good observational skill along with analytical skill. Astronomer should be god in math, logical and should have the capability to interpret the information reasonably. Astronomer should also be well versed in computer knowledge astronomy deals a lot on computers, on passing data across network, editing files, analyzing astronomical images and data. Patience is also a vital skill for astronomers. He should be patient to interpret the data, predict the future possibility and to wait as long as his predictions are proved.
