In the year 1895, a grocer Daniel David Palmer formulated a new theory that implied that most of the diseases are a result of the misplacement of spinal bones. According to him, “subluxations” or the misalignment of the spinal vertebrae can cause diseases by hindering the flow of “nerve energy” from brain to the other parts of the body. Thus, the brain and the nervous system can cure diseases if the vertebral column is restored to its proper position and alignment. This practice is known as chiropractic and the practitioners following it are termed chiropractors.
What do chiropractors do?
Chiropractors claim that the without the use of any kind of drugs or medical procedures, most of the diseases can be cured just by re-adjusting the vertebra back to its form. The only form of medical assistance they require is the analysis of vertebral column with the help of x-ray and other analytical procedures.
There are two fundamental kinds of chiropractors based on the difference of opinion. Straight and Mixers.
Straight chiropractors stick to the original beliefs of the Daniel David Palmer i.e. the basic factor that governs the occurrence of a disease in human beings is the misalignment of the vertebral column. They do not pose as doctors curing incurable diseases but tend to confine themselves in the fields of readjustment of the vertebra in order to restore normal health.
Mixers have a different ideology. They take into account the role germs and hormones play in the occurrence if a disease but nevertheless, they imply that the common factor for such lowered immunity response is the misalignment. Mixers may advise the patients to see a physician and they may use homoeopathic products and nutrient supplicants as well as physiotherapy techniques apart from the spinal manipulations. Most of the chiropractors believe that the diseases can be cured by this technique and only few of them confine their area of expertise to the musculoskeletal problems.
Chiropractors have been successful for such a long period of time because of good marketing and the some anecdotes shared by satisfied customers. Although science does not back up this practice with solid and credible facts, chiropractors surely can help you out in some problems you may face in your day to day life. You must have experienced joint locking which occurs temporarily rendering us unable to move a particular joint. It mostly affects our back, neck or other joints which we use frequently and the relief is always a welcome thing once it gets corrected on its own accord after some twisting of the joint. Similar locking can occur in the vertebra and it is very dangerous and has one in a million chance of causing a stroke. But when a life is at stake, even that “one in a million chance” is sufficient to take the matter seriously. Chiropractor can help you out in such a situation. Fibromyalgia is the presence of dense knotted muscle balls in the regions of neck and shoulders. It causes an intermittent and frequent pain and can be very annoying. Chiropractors are not allowed to use injections or medications but they can be a helping hand in the treatment of this condition.
What should we look for when we want to see a chiropractor? Most importantly, you should know what do chiropractors do? There are some essential things that you should consider before going to a chiropractor. Firstly, the chiropractor should not give a false impression that he is able to cure diseases other than musculoskeletal problems. Your medical doctor must have recommended him. He must advise you by suggesting exercises and various physical therapies because chiropractors do not believe in drugs and medicines. If a visible improvement occurs after 2 or 3 visits, then only you should continue the treatment. Last but not the least, the practitioner must be a member of some reputed instated so that his authenticity cannot be questioned.
Chiropractors are good for musculoskeletal problems and you may very well give it a shot. To try alternative branches of medicine is a risk sometimes but if you have grounds to believe that the practitioner is able enough, then you can always go to them. Despite the lack of scientific evidence supporting them, they can be helpful as long as they stick to the guidelines.
